How to Set Up Mailgun for Sparkforge Email Sending

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Sign up for Mailgun, add a domain or subdomain (US region), publish the five DNS records at your registrar, copy the API key into Sparkforge, then send a test email to confirm delivery.

Mailgun handles outbound email delivery for Sparkforge sends. Setup takes six steps and the only common snag is publishing DNS records at the right registrar.

Step 1: Create your Mailgun account

Sign up at signup.mailgun.com/new/signup and verify your email address from the confirmation message.

Step 2: Add your sending domain

  1. Go to Sending > Add New Domain.
  2. Choose either your main domain or a sending subdomain.
  3. Select the US region (not EU). Sparkforge expects US.
  4. Click Add Domain.

Main domain vs. subdomain

  • Main domain (companyname.com): only use this if the domain isn't already sending email through Google Workspace or another provider.
  • Subdomain (mg.companyname.com, replies.companyname.com): recommended. Doesn't conflict with existing mailboxes.

Step 3: Find your DNS provider

If you aren't sure who hosts your DNS, look up the domain at mxtoolbox.com. The result lists the reporting nameserver (e.g., reported by wordpress.com). That's where the DNS records need to live.

Step 4: Publish the five DNS records

Mailgun gives you five records: two TXT (SPF and DKIM), two MX, and one CNAME for tracking. Add all five in your DNS provider, then click Verify in Mailgun.

Provider-specific guides exist for GoDaddy, Namecheap, Siteground, HostGator, Google Domains, and Cloudflare. The flow is the same: copy each record, create a matching record at the registrar, save.

Step 5: Copy the API key into Sparkforge

Once Mailgun shows the domain as verified, grab the API key from Mailgun's API security page and paste it into Sparkforge under your email integration settings.

Step 6: Send a test email

From the Sparkforge Conversations inbox, send a test email to a personal address. If it lands in the inbox (not spam), Mailgun is wired correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use my main domain or a subdomain for Mailgun?
Use a subdomain like mg.yourdomain.com if the main domain already handles inbox email through Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. A subdomain keeps marketing sends isolated from your inbox.
Why do I need to pick the US region in Mailgun?
Sparkforge's email integration is configured for Mailgun's US infrastructure. Choosing EU during setup will cause the API connection to fail.
How do I know which DNS provider hosts my domain?
Look up the domain at mxtoolbox.com. The bottom of the result will say 'reported by' and name the DNS host (e.g., wordpress.com, godaddy.com).
What if my test email lands in spam?
Verify all five DNS records resolved correctly in Mailgun, then warm up the sending domain by sending small volumes to engaged recipients before scaling up.
