Shopify Abandoned Checkout Workflow Trigger in Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

The Abandoned Checkout trigger fires a Sparkforge workflow when a Shopify shopper adds to cart but doesn’t complete checkout. Filter by duration and cart value, then send email, SMS, tags, or internal alerts to recover the sale.

The Abandoned Checkout trigger runs a Sparkforge workflow whenever a Shopify shopper leaves before completing checkout. Use it to send recovery emails and SMS, tag the contact, or alert sales on high-value carts.

This trigger is for Shopify integrations only. If you’re running a Sparkforge ecommerce store, use the built-in abandoned checkout emails and shareable links instead.

What it does

  • Activates after a configurable wait time once a cart sits incomplete.
  • Filters by checkout duration and cart value so you target the right shoppers.
  • Drives multi-channel follow-up: email, SMS, tag, internal notification.

Add the trigger

  1. Open Automation → Workflows and create a new workflow or edit an existing one.
  2. Click Add New Trigger and search for Abandoned Checkout.
  3. Select it to begin configuration.

Apply filters

Duration

Sets the wait time before a checkout counts as abandoned. Enter the value in minutes. The trigger fires once that window passes without a completed purchase.

Example: set 30 minutes and the trigger fires when the shopper has been idle on checkout for 30 minutes.

Cart value

Targets follow-up by total cart amount. Operators available:

  • Equals to
  • Greater than / Greater than or equal to
  • Less than / Less than or equal to
  • Is not equal to
  • Is empty / Is not empty

Use Greater than $100 to chase high-value carts only, or Less than or equal to $50 to send a different message to lower-ticket shoppers.

Add actions

After the trigger, layer actions:

  • Send Email with the abandoned items and a checkout link.
  • Send SMS for a short reminder.
  • Add Tag for segmentation and reporting.
  • Internal Notification to alert sales on high-value carts.

Publish and test

Save the workflow and toggle Publish to activate. Run a test by abandoning a checkout in your Shopify store, then check Workflow History to confirm the trigger fired and actions ran.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I trigger abandoned checkout workflows for specific products?
Not directly. The trigger filters on cart value and duration, not SKUs. Add a downstream If/Else step or contact tag to branch by product.
What’s a good duration filter to start with?
15–30 minutes works for most fast-moving categories. Higher-ticket items often warrant 24 hours or more so the shopper has time to think.
Does the trigger fire every time a customer abandons a cart?
Yes. Each abandoned checkout starts the workflow. Add wait steps or contact-frequency logic so you don’t spam repeat abandoners.
How do I track recovery performance?
Use workflow analytics for engagement and conversion. Layer in email and SMS open/click rates from the messaging reports for the full picture.
Can I include a discount code after a delay?
Yes. Add a wait step (e.g., 24 hours), then a second email or SMS with a discount code. Branch on whether the contact has already converted.
