How to Set Up Mailgun with Google Domains for Sparkforge

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Sign up for Mailgun in the US region, add your sending subdomain, then add the five DNS records (two TXT, two MX, one CNAME) at Google Domains. Verify in Mailgun and paste the API key into Sparkforge.

Connecting Mailgun to your domain through Google Domains takes about 10 minutes. The flow: create a Mailgun account, add your sending domain or subdomain, copy the five DNS records into Google Domains, then verify in Mailgun.

1. Sign up and add a sending domain

  1. Sign up at mailgun.com and verify your email.
  2. Click Sending > Add New Domain.
  3. Decide between a main domain or a subdomain:
    • Main domain (e.g., companyname.com) — only valid if the domain is not used with Google Workspace or another email provider.
    • Subdomain (recommended) — pick something like mg.companyname.com, replies.companyname.com, or support.companyname.com.
  4. Set the region to US, not EU.
  5. Click Add Domain.

Mailgun will display five DNS records (two TXT, two MX, one CNAME) for you to add at your registrar.

2. Add DNS records at Google Domains

Sign into domains.google.com, open the domain, and click DNS in the left panel.

TXT record 1 — SPF

  • Host name: the subdomain prefix only (mg for mg.companyname.com, replies for replies.companyname.com, or @ for the root domain).
  • Type: TXT
  • Data: v=spf1 include:mailgun.org ~all

Click Create new record to add the next.

TXT record 2 — DKIM

  • Host name: copy from Mailgun. Use only the part up to (but not including) your main domain.
  • Type: TXT
  • Data: the long DKIM string from Mailgun.

MX records

  • Host name: match the subdomain prefix (mg, replies, or @ for root).
  • Type: MX
  • Data (entry 1): 10 mxa.mailgun.org
  • Click + Add more to this record.
  • Data (entry 2): 10 mxb.mailgun.org

CNAME record

  • Host name: email.mg for mg.companyname.com, email.replies for replies.companyname.com, or email for the root domain.
  • Type: CNAME
  • Data: mailgun.org

Click Save.

3. Verify and connect to Sparkforge

  1. Back in Mailgun, click Verify DNS Settings. Records may need a few minutes to propagate before all five turn green.
  2. Once verified, copy the Mailgun API key and paste it into the Mailgun integration in Sparkforge.
  3. Send a test email from a Conversation to confirm delivery and reply tracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use a main domain or a subdomain?
A subdomain like mg.companyname.com is recommended. The main domain only works if it isn't already used with Google Workspace or another email provider.
Why does region need to be US?
The Sparkforge integration expects Mailgun's US region. Domains created in the EU region will not connect.
What goes in the Host name field for the root domain?
Use @ as the host name for any record on the root domain (no subdomain prefix). Google Domains treats @ as the apex.
How long does DNS take to verify?
Usually a few minutes. If some records still show red after saving, click Verify DNS Settings again. Full propagation can take up to 24 hours in rare cases.
What do I do after Mailgun verifies?
Copy your Mailgun API key into the Mailgun integration card in Sparkforge. Then send a test email from a Conversation to confirm delivery and reply tracking work.
