How to Fix SPF, DKIM, and DMARC Authentication Errors

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

When emails fail authentication, recipient servers reject them. Add the SPF, DKIM, MX, CNAME, and DMARC records Sparkforge generates for your domain, verify the setup, and align all From addresses.

If your emails are being rejected, the cause is usually a missing or misconfigured SPF, DKIM, or DMARC record. Recipient servers like Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo block messages that fail these checks. Fix it by publishing the DNS records Sparkforge generates and aligning your From addresses.

Common Authentication Failure Messages

  • The sender's domain failed DMARC authentication
  • Email rejected due to failed or missing SPF or DMARC authentication
  • The sender's domain failed DKIM authentication
  • The From header domain does not align with authenticated SPF or DKIM
  • Sender was not authenticated, so delivery was blocked by recipient policy

The Authentication Trio

  • SPF — verifies which servers are authorized to send email from your domain
  • DKIM — adds a cryptographic signature that proves the message was not altered
  • DMARC — tells recipients what to do when SPF or DKIM checks fail

Domain alignment means the From address must match the authenticated sending domain.

Common Failure Categories

SPF

  • Missing SPF TXT record
  • SPF record exceeds the 10-DNS-lookup limit

DKIM

  • DKIM keys not published in DNS
  • Mismatched DKIM signatures

DMARC

  • No DMARC policy published
  • DMARC set to reject without proper SPF/DKIM in place
  • From address misaligned with authenticated domain

Step 1: Configure a Dedicated Sending Domain

  1. Go to Settings → Email Services → Sending Domain.
  2. Click Add Domain and enter your domain (e.g., yourdomain.com).
  3. Sparkforge generates the SPF, DKIM, MX, CNAME, and DMARC records you need. Keep this page open.

Step 2: Add the DNS Records at Your Registrar

  1. Log into your domain registrar or DNS host and open the DNS zone editor.
  2. SPF — Add a TXT record at @ with the value Sparkforge provides (typically includes v=spf1 include:spf.sparkforgehq.com include:mailgun.org ~all).
  3. DKIM — Add a TXT record using the DKIM selector and public key shown.
  4. MX — Add the MX records exactly as provided.
  5. CNAME (tracking URL) — Add the CNAME using the selector provided.
  6. DMARC — Add a TXT record at _dmarc with v=DMARC1; p=none; to start in monitor mode.

Step 3: Verify the Setup

  1. Return to Settings → Email Services → Sending Domain.
  2. Click Verify Domain.
  3. Wait for all checks to show Verified.
  4. Cross-check with MXToolbox SPF/DKIM/DMARC lookup and Mail-Tester.com.

Step 4: Align All From Addresses

  1. Update every From address to use your authenticated domain — replace noreply@anydomain.com with noreply@yourdomain.com.
  2. Audit existing campaigns, sequences, and automations and update their From addresses.
  3. Send test messages to Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo accounts and inspect headers.

Recovery Timeline

  • 0-48 hours — DNS records propagate globally
  • 24-48 hours — Bounce rates start dropping as authentication takes effect
  • 1-2 weeks — Domain reputation begins recovering with consistent, authenticated sends

Frequently Asked Questions

What records do I need for full email authentication in Sparkforge?
You need SPF, DKIM, MX, CNAME (tracking URL), and DMARC records. Sparkforge generates all of them for you in Settings → Email Services → Sending Domain. Add each one at your DNS provider.
Why does the SPF record have a 10-lookup limit?
SPF specifies that any record requiring more than 10 DNS lookups during evaluation fails. If you include too many third-party services, you exceed the limit. Consolidate or use SPF flattening tools.
Should I start DMARC with reject or none?
Start with p=none to monitor authentication results without affecting delivery. Once SPF and DKIM consistently pass for legitimate mail, move to p=quarantine, then p=reject.
How long does DNS propagation take?
Most providers propagate within 2-48 hours. Sparkforge will mark the domain as Verified once it can confirm all records are live.
What does From address alignment mean?
Your visible From domain must match the domain that signed the message via SPF or DKIM. If you send from noreply@yourdomain.com, the authenticated domain must also be yourdomain.com.
