How to Link Contacts with Custom Association Labels in Sparkforge CRM

By Sparkforge Support Team ·Last reviewed May 3, 2026

Sparkforge CRM contact associations link related contacts with custom labels — single labels for symmetric relationships, pair labels for asymmetric ones like Manager and Employee or Buyer and Seller.

Contact associations in Sparkforge CRM let you formally link related contacts and other objects. Instead of duplicate records or notes, associations create a structured connection you can navigate from either side.

Single labels vs pair labels

  • Single label — both contacts share the same role (e.g., Colleague).
  • Pair labels — each contact has a distinct role (e.g., Manager and Employee, Buyer and Seller).

Why use contact associations

  • Cleaner organization — relationships live on the record, not in notes.
  • Faster outreach — jump from a contact to anyone linked to them.
  • Stronger relationship management — track family, partnerships, or org hierarchies.
  • Less duplicate data — update one record and the link stays consistent.

Where to find associations

  • Contact profile — the right-side panel shows linked contacts and related objects.
  • Settings > Objects > Contacts — manages all association definitions and labels.

Create a contact association

  1. Go to Settings > Objects and select Contacts.
  2. Click + Create Association.
  3. Choose the associated object (Contacts, Surfboards, or another available object).
  4. Pick Single Label or Pair Labels and name them.
  5. Set the relationship type — Many-to-Many or Many-to-One.

Link two contacts using an association

  1. Open a contact profile.
  2. Click the Association icon on the right panel.
  3. Click Add, pick the related contact, and assign the label.
  4. Confirm. The link appears under Related Objects on both contact profiles automatically.

Edit or remove an association

  • Edit a label — Settings > Objects > Contacts, find the association, use the three-dot menu.
  • Unlink contacts — open the contact profile, find the linked record under Related Objects, and remove it.

Limits and behavior

  • A single contact can hold up to 10 associations.
  • One label can connect up to 1,000 contacts.
  • Deleting a label is permanent and requires removing every linked association first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a single label and a pair label?
Single labels apply the same role to both contacts (Colleague). Pair labels assign distinct roles (Manager and Employee, Buyer and Seller).
Can I use contact associations inside workflows or automations?
Not yet. Associations are an organizational tool today; automation hooks are planned for a future release.
How many contacts can one association label connect?
A single contact can hold up to 10 associations, and one label can connect up to 1,000 contacts.
Is deleting an association label reversible?
No. Deleting a label is permanent and you must remove every linked association before the label can be deleted.
Can contacts be associated with custom objects, not just other contacts?
Yes. Predefined objects like Surfboards work today, and broader custom-object support is coming.
